Orlando’s Lost Temple

Morrison's Cafeteria had no chef's table, no craft cocktails, and absolutely no opinion about fancy culinary foam.

Welcome to Monday Morning in Orlando

A Reddit thread this weekend asked Orlandoans where they'd eat their last meal before moving away. Commenters delivered. Beefy King, Santiago's Bodega, Mediterranean Deli, Ravenous Pig, Nile Ethiopian. The chains were mostly absent, except for one β€œWaffle House” comment. So was any mention of a certain theme park's churros. My answer? Easy. DOMU!

ORLANDO REWIND βͺ
Orlando's Lost Temple of Fried Okra and Coconut Cream Pie

Morrison's Cafeteria had no chef's table, no craft cocktails, and absolutely no opinion about fancy culinary foam. What it had, for six glorious decades in Orlando, was a steam-table line long enough to make your arms tired and a solemn promise that nobody would leave hungry.

The whole operation started in Mobile, Alabama in 1920, when J. A. Morrison bet everything on self-service Southern cooking at prices that made eating out feel like a Tuesday. The idea spread like kudzu with a business license, roughly 150 locations across 13 states by mid-century.

Orlando got its first Morrison's on West Central Avenue in 1932, and it immediately baked itself into the city's Saturday ritual: bus downtown, browse the department stores, pile into the cafeteria, argue over dessert.

The kitchens cranked out over 100 items daily: roast beef, fried okra, and enough cream pies to paralyze the indecisive.

In 1996, Piccadilly bought the chain's remaining 142 locations.

Morrison's disappeared from Orlando, but the memories clearly didn't get the memo.

THE SQUEEZE πŸŠ
Drop Everything, There's Poetry for Lunch

Young poets. Community icons. Free lunch. Parramore's about to have a moment.

Page 15's 5th annual Pop-Up Poetry event rolls into The Monroe this Thursday, March 12th, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.. Local students will share the mic with community heavyweights Camara Gaither and News 6's Ginger Gasden.

It's a power hour of original poetry, the kind that builds confidence, sparks connection, and reminds everyone in the room why giving kids a voice matters.

Science even agrees: creative writing helps young people process emotions, sharpen communication skills, and feel like they belong somewhere.

So show up, grab a plate, and bring your donations to support Page 15's programs serving 600+ Central Florida kids all year long.

πŸ’₯ RSVP right here. Appetite encouraged.

Walt's Wildest Pitch

As you know, dear reader, I avoid tourism themes like a Monday morning meeting, but this one’s interesting.

On November 15, 1965, Walt Disney stood before the largest press gathering in Florida history inside Orlando's Cherry Plaza Hotel and described, in vivid detail, a sprawling development he had only ever seen from the air. Not exactly the typical way to sell a project worth billions.

That night, alongside brother Roy and Florida Governor Haydon Burns, he finally spilled the secret consuming Central Florida: who had been quietly gobbling up 27,000 acres southwest of the city.

Disney called it the "Florida Project." The world eventually called it Walt Disney World.

A bronze plaque unveiled last week near the east entrance of MAA Parkside on Central Boulevard, built on the bones of the old Cherry Plaza Hotel, now marks the spot where one spectacularly confident announcement quietly did the impossible.

πŸ“Ή Great clip on the history and unveiling, right here.

When Scammers Win, Orange County Hits Back

Getting swindled stings. One moment you're a savvy consumer; the next, you're doing grim math on how much you've lost.

Here's the good news: Orange County's Consumer Protection Office spent 2025 playing offense.

The office recovered $208,644.44 from shady businesses, one disputed charge, one sketchy contract at a time. Out of 1,255 complaints last fiscal year, staff triaged each one to the right county, state, or federal authority, often resolving disputes simply by getting both sides in the same room.

They also run fraud prevention workshops, because the best scam is the one that never gets pulled on you.

A Konbini Is Coming Back to Orlando

The decade-long wait for a proper Japanese convenience store in Orlando is almost over.

This summer, chef William Shen rides to the rescue. The mind behind two-Michelin-starred Sorekara and several Mills Market concepts is opening UniMart, a konbini-style counter inside the beloved Colonial Drive food hall.

Konbini fried chicken, curated Japanese snacks, tamago sandos, bento boxes, all yours between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. daily.

Mills Market co-founder and James Beard-nominated restaurateur Johnny Tung calls it a personal mission: bringing a slice of Japanese convenience culture straight to Orlando's doorstep.
