ORLANDO REWIND βͺ
Last Call: The Club Orlando Still Can't Forget
For most of the 2000s, finding the best night out in downtown Orlando required zero navigation skills. You just followed the bass.
It always led to Tabu Nightclub at 46 North Orange Avenue, a century-old theater that had already survived vaudeville, silent films, and a wrestling match before Tabu crashed the party in 2001.
For nine years, it owned Saturday nights with hip-hop, kept service industry workers dancing on Sundays, and somehow convinced both Howie Dorough of the Backstreet Boys and powerhouse attorney Mark NeJame to put their names on the marquee.
The secret? Showing up. Resident DJ Richie Rich packed the floor so tight you couldn't spill your drink even if you tried. Free-entry cards blanketed Orange Avenue like confetti. The crowds kept coming back, and a 2009 club blogger called Tabu "likely the most famous of Orlando clubs" for exactly that reason.
When Tabu finally closed in late 2010, there was no farewell tour, no teary press release. The doors just quietly stopped opening, classic Tabu, honestly.
The room eventually became The Beacham. But ask any Orlando local for directions, and half of them will still say: you know, the old Tabu, a club whose nine-year run on Orange Avenue left a deeper mark on the city than most venues manage in a lifetime. That corner still belongs to Tabu.

THE SQUEEZE π
Pets Get a Seat at the Safety Table
Leaving an abusive situation is hard enough, but leaving your fur baby behind? For many survivors, that's simply a deal-breaker.
Harbor House of Central Florida gets it.
Orange County's certified domestic violence center runs the Paws for Peace Kennel, where survivors and their pets, dogs, cats, and beyond, check in together.
Animals receive full veterinary care while their humans access counseling, legal advocacy, and shelter services.
No impossible choices. No leaving anyone behind.
Their message is simple: we welcome both of you.
The Meter May Run Out on Orlando's Decade-Old Downtown Parking Rates
Parking in downtown Orlando has been laughably cheap for nearly two decades. Weβre talking $1 an hour on the street, $2 in a garage.
A genuine Orlando steal. But 17 years of frozen rates have finally broken the city's self-funded parking division, which needs $20 million over the next five years just to haul the system into 2026.
The fix? Progressive pricing kicking off at $2 on-street, $3 off-street, event parking doubling to $20, and fines getting a healthy bump too. Fans of the plan say faster turnover means more people flooding downtown.
As for the skeptics? They're worried that confused (or technology challenged letβs say) drivers will stumble through a cashless, meter-less system straight into a bigger ticket.
City council votes in a few weeks, and if it passes, feel the difference October 1st of this year.

How a Boring Envelope Changed Everything for 345,000 People
For tens of thousands of Orange County residents, salvation arrived in the most unlikely package, a plain, boring envelope.
Inside? The news that their medical debt was gone. Poof. Vanished.
Through a partnership with national nonprofit Undue Medical Debt, bankrolled by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, the county has erased a jaw-dropping $559 million in debt across 345,000 residents. The latest round alone, announced last week, knocked out $43 million for 42,000 people.
π₯· Now, here comes the ninja move. Every dollar spent wipes out roughly $100 in debt, purchased in bulk, directly from hospitals and collectors, at a fraction of face value.
County officials say families can now breathe easy and focus on what actually matters, their health and their futures.
