Quick question: what's the most ambitious thing you've done with a shovel? Planted some tomatoes? Buried a time capsule? Dug a hole at the beach and called it a day?
Lauren Thelwell took a shovel and started a health movement.
It All Started With a Shovel
Back in 2022, Lauren launched Dig Deeper 4 Health in the most literal way possible: by digging. It started as a community garden where volunteers grew fresh produce for local families. The mission was refreshingly simple. Help people eat better, and help them understand why it matters.
Nice name, right? Turns out it was also a spoiler.
When the Garden Disappeared
Then, one day, the garden was gone. Not in a mysterious, overnight-crop-circle kind of way. The project simply lost access to its growing space.
Most people would have hung up their gardening gloves. Lauren basically said, "Cool, we'll do it without the garden," and kept going. She teamed up with community food distribution sites, recruited physician mentors, and pivoted harder than a ballroom dancer mid-spin.
(Speaking of which, we'll get to that.)
Veggies, Meet Knowledge
These days, Lauren and her small but mighty volunteer crew run monthly healthy produce distributions through Orlando's Neighborhood Fridge. Fresh food, real neighbors, zero fuss.
But Lauren had a lightbulb moment: a bag of veggies feeds a family for a week, while knowing what to do with your health can serve a family for a lifetime. So she worked with doctors to create free, physician-reviewed guides on the stuff that sneaks up on so many of us:
- Diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Heart disease
- Healthy nutrition
No confusing medical speak. No twelve-syllable words. Just straightforward info you can actually use while standing in your kitchen wondering what to do with that zucchini.
Hola, Bonjou, Hello!
Here's the part that makes us want to throw confetti. Lauren's materials come in English, Spanish, and now Haitian Creole.
Because what good is great health advice if it's written in a language you don't speak? Lauren's philosophy is simple: meet people where they are, in a language they understand. It's plain smart, and deeply kind.
And she's on the move. Her outreach is expanding to more spots around town, including the Pine Hills Community Center, so even more families can get their hands on these resources.
Wait, She Does What Else?
Oh, did we mention Lauren is doing all of this while in college? Yes, between lectures and exams, she's wrangling volunteers, coordinating produce drops, and collaborating with physicians. Some of us struggle to return a library book on time.
And when the textbooks close? Lauren hits the floor as a ballroom dancer. Honestly, it tracks. Anyone who can waltz around a lost garden, cha-cha through college, and foxtrot across language barriers clearly has excellent footwork.
The Grand Finale
At the root of it all (sorry, last garden pun... maybe) is one big belief: your income, your language, or your circumstances should never decide whether you can get healthy food and basic health info. Healthier living shouldn't be a luxury. It should be on everyone's plate.
So here's to Lauren Thelwell of Winter Springs: gardener, student, dancer, health champion, and living proof that when life takes away your garden, you just dig deeper.
