A Different Kind of Hero

Our Community Superstar feature typically celebrates the incredible people making Central Florida better. But here's the thing, sometimes the most impactful community members have four legs instead of two. And if anyone's earned the Superstar title, it's Lacey, a therapy dog who's been quietly changing lives across the region for nearly a decade.

The Dog Who Didn't Get the Memo

If you know anything about Australian Shepherds, you know they're basically caffeinated tornadoes with fur. They herd. They zoom. They have approximately 47 times more energy than any reasonable creature should possess.

Someone forgot to tell Lacey.

This rescue dog came pre-programmed with the kind of zen energy that would make a yoga instructor jealous. While her Aussie Shepherd cousins are bouncing off walls and inventing new extreme sports, Lacey's over here being the canine equivalent of a warm hug and your favorite blanket combined.

Kids pick up on this immediately. They just know. Like Lacey's radiating some kind of "everything's going to be okay" frequency that only works on humans who still believe in magic, which, let's be honest, is exactly who needs it most.

The Resume That Puts Us All to Shame

Over the past eight years, Lacey has racked up more than 600 volunteer hours as a Certified Therapy Dog. That's 600 hours of being professional-level adorable while also providing actual, legitimate comfort to people who really need it.

Her office? All of Central Florida. Her job description? Basically everything that involves making people feel better.

She's shown up at schools where test anxiety is running rampant. She's been the star attraction at UCF de-stress days, where college students realize that petting a very good dog is significantly more effective than their fifth energy drink. She's worked with R.E.A.D. Programs, where kids who struggle with reading discover that reading to Lacey is somehow way less scary than reading to humans (Lacey is an excellent listener and has never once corrected anyone's pronunciation).

Lacey's also been there for the really hard stuff: hospitals, natural disasters, and people dealing with illness or emotional distress. She's got this superpower where she just knows how to be exactly what someone needs: a calming presence, a soft place to land, a reminder that good things still exist in the world.

Through "Lacey's Adventures," she's basically become Central Florida's four-legged therapist, working for treats and belly rubs instead of a 401(k).

Bonus: She's Also a Published Author (Sort Of)

Here's a fun fact that absolutely nobody saw coming: Lacey has inspired seven children's books. SEVEN.

This laid-back rescue dog is basically a literary phenomenon. Move over, Lassie, there's a new canine celebrity in town, and she's taking the slow and steady approach to fame. Very on-brand for her, honestly.

Time to Retire the Therapy Vest

After nearly eight years of making Central Florida a better place one tail wag at a time, Lacey is officially retiring this year. She's earned it.

Her legacy? Countless kids who felt brave enough to read out loud. College students who made it through finals week. Hospital patients who found a moment of peace. People who were reminded that sometimes comfort comes with four paws and doesn't ask for anything in return except maybe a good ear scratch.

Lacey proved that you don't have to be the loudest, fastest, or most energetic to make a massive difference. Sometimes being the calmest dog in the room, the one who shows up, pays attention, and radiates "I've got you" energy, is exactly what the world needs.

Enjoy your retirement, Lacey. You've more than earned those extra naps.
