Welcome to Thursday Morning, Orlando!
Luna’s latest gimmick is jumping on my lap while I’m eating at the table. She’s a sneaky kitty and investigates what she can rip off. Historically, she’s enjoyed grilled chicken, cheese (don’t most cats like cheese?), and even lettuce! 🤣 She started out life as an alley kitten, so perhaps it’s instinct.
Now, in today’s issue:
- Heat Island
- Dessert Wars
- The Sleeping Beauty
- + lots of weekend recs

3 QUICK NEWS BITS ⏲️
96 Years Young and Headed for the Hills
At 96, Jim Turrisi isn’t slowing down, he’s just changing zip codes.
The Orlando Fire Department and Friends of the Fire Museum threw a farewell party Monday at the Randall R. Tuten Orlando Fire Museum to send off the department’s oldest retiree in style.
Turrisi joined OFD in 1954, worked his way through four firehouses over 23 years, and retired as a lieutenant in 1977.
After hanging up his gear, the Vietnam veteran spent his retirement volunteering at the museum, which happened to be the very firehouse where he once served, leading tours that no history book could replicate.
Not a bad run, Jim.
Keeping Their Cool
The back-to-school season was a lot hotter. NOAA confirmed that June through August 2026 were the hottest on record in 132 years of tracking. As students returned to campuses in mid-August, schools in Orlando and Tampa, already among the worst cities for urban heat island exposure, felt every degree of it.
Orange County schools are punching back with shade structures, overhead fans, hydration stations, and double-paned tinted windows that keep classrooms noticeably cooler. The mission is simple: keep kids outside longer, moving more, and melting less.
Sunshades are already up at more than 100 elementary schools across the district, with roughly a dozen left to go.

Orlando Science Center Aced the Zoo World’s Toughest Test
In contrast to the SlothWorld debacle (R.I.P. too many sloths ☹️), Orlando Science Center has some genuinely good animal news to share.
The Association of Zoos and Aquariums just gave OSC its coveted accreditation, and trust us, they don’t hand those out like brochures.
Earning it meant surviving a grueling multi-day inspection covering everything from veterinary care and conservation programs to financial stability and staff training. OSC officials even had to defend their record before the Commission in person at its annual conference in Portland, Oregon.
President and CEO JoAnn Newman says the honor reflects OSC’s core mission: caring deeply for the animals in its Life exhibit while championing conservation education.
Kudos to OSC on top care for their animals!
