ORLANDO REWIND โช
The Phoenix of Orlando's Music Scene: A Will's Pub Story
In 1995, Will Walker transformed a hollow furniture warehouse on 17-92 near Princeton into Will's Loch Haven Pub, armed with nothing but pool tables, a billiards mural, and zero music industry experience.
When local musicians approached this native Orlandoan about hosting shows, magic happened. The intimate venue became Orlando's alternative music heartbeat, welcoming legends like At The Drive-In, The Decemberists, The Mountain Goats, and Motion City Soundtrack to its modest foot-high stage.
Then catastrophe struck in 2006. Urban development demolished Walker's beloved venue, crushing Orlando's music community. For over two years, Will's Pub existed only in memory, its sound system sold to another venue like organs harvested from a corpse.
But Walker wasn't finished. In 2008, he achieved the impossible: resurrection in the Mills 50 District. The new location featured an improved, elevated stage while maintaining the original's intimate soul. Miraculously, the magic transferred.
Today, Will's Pub operates as a 200-capacity venue with live music seven nights weekly, 16 craft beers on tap, and daily happy hour from 4-7 PM.
As it celebrates its 30th anniversary this month, Will's Pub remains the "church of rock" for Orlando's music community, proof that authentic connections outlast any wrecking ball.
THE SQUEEZE ๐
Beyond Survival Mode: Derricka Destiny's Journey from Foster Care to Published Author
Meet Derricka Destiny, Orlando's newest author who's flipping the script on foster care stories. Those walks to Boone High School? They were secretly training her for the adventure of a lifetime.
After aging out of foster care at 18 (ten years in the system!), most people might play it safe. Not Derricka. At 20, she said "see ya later" to everything familiar, packed her bags, and globe-trotted across three countries because why not prove to the world (and herself) that life's got endless possibilities?
Now she's channeling that bold energy into something incredible. Her debut book, The Path Isn't Linear: Growing Beyond the System drops October 10th. Think part memoir, part superhero guide for fellow foster care alumni.
Between volunteering with HEM Alliance, working at a housing nonprofit, and staying active in Orlando's arts scene, she's basically becoming the community cheerleader everyone needs.
Derricka's mission? Simple but powerful: show young people that survival mode is just the beginning, and thriving is totally within reach.

Orange County's Secret Sauce: Turning Art Into Cold, Hard Cash
Orange County's Secret Sauce: Turning Art Into Cold, Hard Cash
Magic happens when thousands storm the Orlando Fringe Festival or Opera Orlando takes the stage, and we're not just talking about the performances. Orange County Arts & Cultural Affairs has cracked the code on turning tourist tax dollars into a cultural goldmine that makes everyone richer.
Their 2024 masterpiece? Nearly $4 million sprinkled across 40 nonprofits, from Florida Film Festival to the Orlando Ballet, which these savvy organizations parlayed into over $38 million in total funding. Talk about multiplication!
The spectacular resultsโฆ1.8 million dazzled audience members (25% tourists), $89 million in economic fireworks, 2,600 jobs created, and $5 million flowing to state coffers.
The formula works. This isn't charity, it's cultural capitalism at its finest, where creativity and commerce dance together beautifully.
Hereโs a deeper dive into all this arts economic activity.
Main Street District Charts New Territory in Downtown's Urban Puzzle
The City District Main Street program is making moves, snatching up two blocks from Washington Street to Robinson Street in the North Quarter, and this is just the beginning of their northward takeover.
Wedged between I-4 and Lake Eola like a sandwich filling, this scrappy district has mastered the art of rooftop parties and sidewalk celebrations. Sure, their programming might not be as visible as the obvious charms of Curry Ford West or Thornton Park when you're working without proper green space, but they've got game.
Now with 60 new businesses joining the party, they're ready to show off with the Downtown Orlando Field Day on November 6th and the festive Deck the District on November 20.

Orange County's $200 Million Budget Diet
Orange County officials are putting their spending plan on a serious diet, trimming a whopping $200 million from their 2025-26 fiscal year budget. Think of it as the county's version of cutting back after the holidays, except the stakes are a bit higher than fitting into last year's jeans.
The belt-tightening began after Mayor Jerry Demings sent department heads a clear message in February: no asking for budget increases this year.
Despite the financial squeeze, the county's still-hefty $8.3 billion spending plan keeps the essentials well-fed, with $1 billion for public safety, $23.9 million for transportation, $33 million for parks, and $17.7 million for affordable housing.
District 5 Commissioner Kelly Martinez Semrad admits the cuts feel nearly impossible given the county's growing population, kind of like trying to feed more people with less food. Residents will get their chance to weigh in during public hearings coming up on Thursday, September 18th.
