3 QUICK NEWS BITS ⏲️
Loitering With Purpose: Church Street's New Era Begins
Church Street's about to trade "thru traffic" for "hang around a while."
Orlando's Community Redevelopment Agency is breaking ground on a three-phase makeover from Garland Avenue to Magnolia Avenue, built for year-round festivals, outdoor dining, local businesses, and easy multimodal travel. Basically, a downtown you actually want to stick around in.
First up: a curbless, 11-foot-lane glow-up to the railroad tracks, done by winter 2026.
Next, benches and planters roll out toward Orange Avenue by spring 2028.
Grand finale: two-way traffic and LYMMO buses join the mix, wrapping by early summer 2028.
Bring patience for detours. A more connected, welcoming Church Street is worth the wait.
Orlando Public Library Prepares for a New Chapter
Big things are brewing at the Orlando Public Library!
The Orange County Library System is dropping $18 million on a first-floor makeover, with construction kicking off this fall.
The Children's Library is packing up and moving to Library Central, making room for interactive exhibits and way more fun for young bookworms. There's also a workforce development center on the way, plus fresh tech and flexible spaces perfect for community hangouts.
Don't worry, the building's iconic Brutalist look is staying put. No renderings yet, but early sketches tease a snazzier entrance.
One thing's for sure: Orlando's favorite free hangout spot is about to level up.
Good Intentions, Unexpected Neighbors
Florida just handed school districts a housing superpower. Any parcel three acres or bigger can now sprout apartments, zoning be damned.
Orange County Public Schools wasted no time, leasing 8.5 acres near old Catalina Elementary to a developer for a symbolic dollar a year, for 99 years, in exchange for 100 apartments, many earmarked for teachers.
Lakeside neighbors in Isle of Catalina are not thrilled, trading manicured yards for protest signs and grumbling about traffic, flooding, and whether "teacher housing" stays that way past year one. The district quietly ditched its rezoning request once the new law made it optional.
Moral of the story: good intentions, meet unintended consequences.
