3 QUICK NEWS BITS ⏲️
Orlando Is Letting Its Streets Do the Dirty Work

Lake Arnold (about 2 miles from DTO) has a pollution problem: nitrogen, phosphorus, and bacteria hitching a ride on stormwater runoff straight into its waters. Florida regulators have officially labeled it "impaired," which is about as bad as it sounds.

Orlando's fix? Rip up two streets and replace them with pavement that actually filters the mess before it reaches the lake. This fall, sections of Strathmore Drive and Dover Street will be swapped out for pervious concrete, pavement porous enough to let stormwater seep through and trap pollutants underground.

The $1.3 million pilot, bolstered by an $800,000 state grant, will test several pavement styles head-to-head. If the lake cleans up, the city is ready to take the concept citywide.

🧐 Really fascinating stuff. Check out the 3 minute video, right here.

A Party With a Purpose

Since 1989, Taste! Central Florida has proven that the best nights out leave a mark. Over $5 million raised. More than 20 million meals delivered to children facing hunger across Central Florida.

Not bad for a dinner party.

The region's top chefs, restaurants, and beverage experts show up, cook, pour, and give, and 100% of proceeds go straight to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida and the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida. No exceptions.

Good food. Great company. Even better cause.

It’s this Friday, August 28th at the Orlando World Center Marriott | 6:30–11:00 p.m. | 21+ | Cocktail Attire requested.

A New Direction Is Coming to Magnolia Avenue

Downtown Orlando's Magnolia Avenue is finally getting out of its own way. The city is wrapping up the first phase of a project flipping the corridor from one-way to two-way between Livingston Street and South Street, near the Dr. Phillips Center, with an October finish line in sight.

The fix was years in the making, sparked, oddly enough, by $27 parking tickets that were costing Uber drivers money and downtown businesses customers.

Re-striping and fresh parking on both sides of the road are part of the deal. LYMMO buses will roll with regular traffic, no delays expected.

Phase 2 brings lights, street festivals, and a late-2027 deadline. Commissioner Shan Rose calls it the city's love letter to small businesses.

TOP 3 FUN RECS FOR THE WEEKEND 🍊
Lei’d Back Luau

Source: Boxi Park

📍Boxi Park. 6877 Lake Nona Blvd, Orlando, FL 32827. Map to this location.

🕐 Friday, August 28th, 7-10 p.m.

Forget the dinner reservation you were going to make. This is better.

Their Luau brings Polynesia to life with hula dancers who tell stories through every movement, live guitar, ukulele, and the rolling thunder of Tahitian drums. The music alone is worth showing up for, but then someone walks out with a knife on fire.

The fire knife performance is exactly what it sounds like. And somehow still more than you expect.

Ride the Cyclone

📍Theatre South Playhouse. The Marketplace at Dr. Phillips, 7601 Della Dr #15, Orlando, FL 32819. Map to this location.

🕐 Friday, August 28th at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, August 29th at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, August 30th at 2 p.m.

A Canadian chamber choir boards a roller coaster. They never get off.

That's the premise of Ride the Cyclone, the darkly comic musical by Jacob Richmond and Brooke Maxwell.

When a freak accident lands the choir in limbo, a mechanical fortune teller offers each member a chance to tell their story, with the ultimate prize on the line: their own life back.

It's absurd, it's funny, and somehow, it hits harder than it has any right to.
