(GREATER) ORLANDO REWIND ⏪
Striped Pants and Tartar Sauce

Out front stood a kid in striped trousers hoisting a double-decker burger above his head like he'd just won something. For nearly 24 years, that statue was a landmark on West Colonial Drive, and the Frisch's Big Boy behind it was where west Orlando families went for dinner.

The restaurant opened at 3240 W. Colonial in 1968, and the ground-breaking was exactly as Florida as you'd expect. The ceremonial crew included Nova Ramsey of Titusville. Simultaneously, the Tangerine Bowl Queen and the Florida Citrus Commission's "Miss OJ Break," because of course orange juice had its own royalty. The Orange County Regional History Center preserved a photo of the moment, noting this was already the chain's third Orlando-area location.

Dave Frisch had licensed the Big Boy concept from its California creator back in 1946, swapped the dressing for tartar sauce, and built a Midwestern empire that somehow made perfect sense on a Florida highway.

The format was sit-down, not grab-and-go. Booths, servers, onion rings, hot fudge cake. Kids begged for dessert. Parents actually finished their coffee, a minor miracle!

By 1991, Frisch's had retreated to its Ohio base and sold the Florida locations to a franchisee. It didn't last. On July 26, 1992, the grills went cold.

Bring it up with the right Orlandoans and someone will still rave about the tartar sauce.

🍰 We barely touched the Hot Fudge Cake. The full piece covers twelve Florida locations at the chain's peak, a near-retirement for the beloved mascot, and lots more.Get the full order here.

THE SQUEEZE 🍊
Orlando’s Ditched the Meter

Quarters, meet your retirement.

Last week, the City of Orlando launched Phase II of its parking modernization initiative, and your glove compartment full of change is officially useless.

Paid parking now runs 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday, free overnight, Sundays and holidays. Rates ticked up: $1 more for the first two hours, $2 more for a third, a progressive structure designed to nudge turnover and cut down on those dreaded overtime fines.

Garages cap at $20 daily, making them the smart play for longer stays and event nights.

Got a citation? You now have 21 days to pay before a late fee hits — up from 14. Garage pricing is proximity-based too, meaning less-trafficked spots cost less, which helps spread the crowd and ease congestion.

Pay via ParkMobile, text or phone. Simple as that.

Orange County's Transit Dream Just Got a Fighting Chance

Orange County commissioners heard a pitch last week that transit advocates have dreamt about for years.

The Sunshine Transit Advancement Resolution, the STAR Plan, would wire eight rapid transit corridors across the county, starting with frequent, signal-prioritized buses that never hit a red light, then eventually graduating to light and heavy rail.

Think less gridlock, more go-go-go.

Modeled on Miami-Dade's SMART Plan and bankrolled through tax increment financing, the proposal comes courtesy of Sunrise Movement Orlando, a youth-led climate group that has already held eight town halls and lined up political support. Commissioner Kelly Martinez Semrad called for a feasibility study, covering demand, routes, and finances — to get the ball rolling.

Orange County voted down a transit sales tax in 2022. This time, advocates are trying a different door.

✈️ Orlando’s best flight deal - Art Basel and Biscayne Bay edition

Miami in late October is dialed in. The heat's finally backing off, Art Basel fever is starting to build, and the city is buzzing with creative energy. Spend a morning at the Pérez Art Museum right on Biscayne Bay, wander through the Ancient Spanish Monastery in North Miami Beach (yes, it's a 12th-century monastery and yes, it's real), and eat your way through Calle Ocho in Little Havana where the food is outstanding and the cafecito hits like a freight train. Coconut Grove is gorgeous this time of year, the bay is perfect for a sunset cruise, and the Design District has enough eye candy to fill an entire afternoon.

Orlando (MCO) → Miami (MIA) for 195 bucks* (non-stop!), round-trip Thursday through Sunday, late-October. See the deal.

Orlando Area Eateries Coming & Going

1️⃣ COMING SOON: Nigel’s Bananas - Dipped, Drizzled, and Orlando-Bound

Nigel's Bananas (Insta), the beloved Watersound, Florida frozen treat shop, is bringing its chocolate-dipped magic to Park Avenue in Winter Park. The menu goes beyond its namesake fruit: choose a frozen banana, ice cream bar, cheesecake, or key lime pie, dip it in chocolate, pile on the toppings, and call it a day.

2️⃣ COMING SOON: Ceviche Arigato - Japan Called, Peru Answered

Peru and Japan have more in common than you'd think, and Ceviche Arigato (Insta) has been proving it across Florida. Orlando is next, becoming the third location after Weston and West Palm Beach. The menu pulls from the owner's family recipes: sushi dressed in Peruvian-style sauces, ceviche with a Japanese twist, and zero apologies for either.

FOODIE FIND, FORK YEAH! 🤩

El Pueblo Mexican Restaurant

📍7124 Aloma Ave., Winter Park, Florida 32792. Map to this location.

Tucked into a strip plaza on Aloma Avenue in Winter Park, El Pueblo Mexican Restaurant (Insta) has been quietly winning over locals since 2003.

Founded by Francisco and Raquel Mandujano, who brought their Guanajuato recipes straight from Mexico, this place doesn't chase trend, it just cooks.

The gorditas with picadillo and cotija have developed a devoted following, the daily specials keep things interesting, and the 2026 Orlando Sentinel named it Critic's Choice for Best Mexican.

Word gets around.
